Point Cloud Survey

A point cloud survey is a method of capturing your building with accuracy and detail for you to use and take measurements. The speed of scanning is much faster and more accurate than any of the traditional surveying methods currently used in the UK.

We capture data using drones, 3D scanning cameras, and lidar scanners depending on the project required. Once we’ve processed the data it can be converted into software such as Revit, Autocad, and any other similar software for you to take measurements, or turn into drawings and “as-built” plans of your building.

Let Drone Site Surveys capture your point cloud data today.

Why Survey Using Point Clouds?

There are many reasons to use point clouds over traditional building measurements. Here are just a few for you to consider.

Speed

Using drones and photogrammetry software, we can capture very large buildings in a matter of hours with a finished point cloud delivered within 48 hours.

Accuracy

The drone technology and laser scanning allow us to achieve measured surveys that are of millimeter accuracy. Giving you a highly accurate snapshot of your building

Cost

Given the speed with which we can capture data, a point cloud reduces time on site for surveyors and allows you to save money on your data capturing costs.

File Types We Can Produce

Our 3D laser scanning can produce accurate data in a large variety of formats. No matter what software your using, or how your workflow works, our team can product something that works for you.

Here are just some of the file types we can produce.

  • ASPRS LAS (.las)
  • Compressed LAZ (.laz)
  • ASCII PTS (.pts)
  • Point Cloud Data (.pcd)
  • ASTM E57 (.e57)
  • Autodesk ReCap (.rcp)
  • Autodesk ReCap (.rcs)
  • Autodesk DXF (.dxf)
  • XYZ point Cloud (.txt)
  • Scene Layer Package (.slpk)

Capture LiDAR Point Cloud

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a remote sensing technology that captures detailed three-dimensional data by emitting laser pulses towards the target area. The process begins with a LiDAR sensor, typically mounted on an aircraft or terrestrial platform, sending out rapid laser beams. These beams bounce off surfaces and return to the sensor, allowing the system to calculate the distance to each object with remarkable accuracy. The collected data is then compiled into a dense “point cloud” that represents the physical environment, capturing everything from ground surfaces to buildings and vegetation. This method is particularly valued for its precision and ability to operate in low-light or densely vegetated areas.

LiDAR vs Photogrammetry

While both LiDAR and photogrammetry are used to generate 3D models, they operate using distinct methodologies:

  • Data Capture:

    • LiDAR utilises laser pulses to measure distances, ensuring high accuracy in various conditions.
    • Photogrammetry relies on overlapping photographs taken from multiple angles to reconstruct the scene, making it dependent on lighting and image quality.
  • Accuracy and Detail:

    • LiDAR excels in producing precise geometric data, which is crucial for detailed terrain and infrastructure mapping.
    • Photogrammetry offers rich visual textures and colour details, though its accuracy can be compromised by environmental factors.
  • Cost and Processing:

    • LiDAR systems tend to be more expensive and often require specialised software and expertise for processing.
    • Photogrammetry is generally more cost-effective, utilising standard digital cameras and accessible software solutions.
