There are many reasons why the Construction Industry can benefit from using drones, we will focus on 6 in this article. Drone usage is increasing in Construction, and there are many reasons behind this exploding new market. As technology develops, and drones get updated capabilities using modern sensors, you can start to understand why.
Whilst technology is making drones safer and more able to deliver essential tasks, the general public will need to become more comfortable with drones flying around our cities, towns, and villages before drones become mainstream.
We are on our way though, whether it be delivery, cleaning, firefighting, security, gaming, or fitness. There are drones for all these industries.
The Construction industry is what concerns Drone Site Surveys the most, and we are seeing real technological advances and how the industry can benefit from using drones. From Thermography to highly accurate measurements, electrical equipment testing to digital mapping, UAV’s are becoming increasingly crucial in Construction.

The 6 Reasons why drones are so important in the Construction Industry, and why drone use will flourish in the coming years
Drones reduce the need for people working at height
Reduce the number of people required for most tasks
Reduces the time required for working at height inspections
Reduce the number of steps in the task
Make working at height cheaper
Replaces older, more traditional and soon-to-be-outdated methods
Drone Site Surveys is starting to utilize technological advances and develop the processes and services that we offer. Getting our first RTK Drone, the DJI Phantom 4 RTK SDK, allows us to now get within ±2.7cm accuracy when flying at 100m.
On construction sites, we can now offer topographical, progress, and volumetric surveys, along with amazing visuals for marketing and sharing updates with stakeholders.
We also create 3D rendered models of buildings by using photogrammetry software installed in the drone, which stitches together the 2D images to create a 3D model.
Drones can also be used in the security and monitoring of on-site staff and materials.
Drones do not just monitor, they also work. Some drones have been developed and are still developing the ability to perform routine tasks. An example would be window cleaning drones, which remove the need for man-safe systems on tall buildings, eliminate the need for men and women to put their lives at risk performing such rudimentary tasks as cleaning the windows. Some drones can spray crops, inspect powerlines and wind turbines, even deliver parcels, times they are a-changing.
According to PWC, a construction site survey can take place up to 400 times quicker using a drone. You can read the full report here. PWC also states that embedding periodic drone flights into your construction workflow provides an indisputable data timeline that has virtually eliminated disagreements over project status during and after the job.
